Well, the kids are back in school and the heat is really cranking… not a bad weekend to find something to do inside.

Thankfully, there are a few things going on around Tyler this weekend.

🏛️ What's in the city's proposed 2027 budget
The proposed budget would raise the average Tyler homeowner's city property tax bill about $48 a year, or $4 a month. Water bills go up $10 monthly in two steps to cover federally mandated sewer work. Public hearings are August 26 and September 9. Read more

🎒 School Is Cool hands out 2,000 free backpacks
The city's 13th annual School Is Cool event handed out 2,000 free backpacks stuffed with supplies on August 6, plus free haircuts, vision screenings and immunizations. Parents lined the sidewalk hours before doors opened. Organizers say 2,000 is the sweet spot now. Read more

🏫 Tyler ISD kicks off the year with raises for staff
Tyler ISD staff packed Green Acres Baptist Church for convocation Friday, with Rep. Nathaniel Moran giving the keynote and comedian Eddie B closing it out. Students headed back Wednesday. Teachers start the year on a new $50,500–$75,000 scale, plus a $500 retention stipend. Read more

🏬 A second Academy Sports is coming to west Tyler
State filings show a 55,000-square-foot Academy Sports + Outdoors going up near Sam's Club at Earl Campbell Parkway and Loop 323. Construction starts November 3, with completion set for March 2027. The South Broadway store isn't going anywhere. Read more

💧 Flint wastewater plant fined $162,000
The TCEQ fined the Woodmark Utilities wastewater plant in Flint $162,000 after finding repeated permit violations between March 2024 and January 2025. Testing showed five pollutants discharged above legal limits, two of them roughly ten times over. Owner Liberty Utilities is now working toward compliance. Read more

And just like that, summer break is over.

This week, students across East Texas are heading back to classrooms, teachers are welcoming a new group through their doors, parents are getting back into routines, and everybody is trying to remember what time they actually have to leave the house in the morning.

To all of our students, teachers, administrators, coaches, staff, and parents: welcome back!

I hope this school year is full of great memories, new friendships, big wins, and maybe just a few snow days. (Okay, maybe not in August.)

There’s something about the start of a new school year that makes life feel like it’s getting back into a rhythm. Summer vacations are wrapping up, schedules are settling down, and before we know it, we’ll be talking about football, cooler weather, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Which brings me to one important question...

Maybe you spent the summer realizing you need another bedroom.

Maybe the kids are getting older and suddenly everyone needs their own space.

Maybe you hosted last Thanksgiving and swore you’d never cram that many people into your kitchen again.

Or maybe you’ve simply been wondering what else is out there.

This is a great time to start looking.

You don’t have to be ready to put a sign in the yard tomorrow. Sometimes the first step is simply figuring out what your home could sell for, what’s available in the areas you love, and whether making a move actually makes sense.

If buying or selling has been somewhere in the back of your mind, let’s talk about it before the holidays sneak up on us.
