Hey Tyler!
Well, the heat finally decided to show up, gifting us with the kind of week where you plan your whole day around when you'll be standing in air conditioning. Good news: a lot of what's happening this week is either indoors, after dark, or involves being near water.
We've got a stacked weekend. Live music practically every night, a Christmas in July luau at Lone Star Harley-Davidson, a Knockouts double header at Mike Carter Field, and a night hike out at Tyler State Park.
Let's get into it.
In today's edition:
🍎 Tyler ISD approved a new pay package for next school year
🎶 A weekend full of live music from Tyler to Lindale to Whitehouse
⚾ Four Knockouts home games in seven days

🧱 Downtown Tyler hits a milestone you can actually see Crews have started laying the historic bricks back down on a portion of West Ferguson Street — the first really visible payoff after weeks of water and sewer line work. City of Tyler engineer Darin Jennings said the underground utility work is finished on that stretch, which cleared the way for concrete and then the old bricks. Work on Ferguson between Broadway and North Bois D'Arc started June 1, and the street is expected to reopen by mid-September. When it does, everything west of Broadway will be open again, and Ferguson will run two ways like the rest of the reopened streets. Read more
🍎 Tyler ISD approves new pay package for the 2026–2027 school year The Tyler ISD school board voted Monday night on a compensation package that covers teachers, support staff, coaches, and district police officers. Teacher pay will range from $50,500 for a beginning non-certified teacher up to $75,000 for someone with 31 or more years in. Teachers also get a $500 retention stipend in August, and bilingual and special education teachers get an extra $4,000 on top of base pay. Everyone else — professional staff, clerical, trades, bus drivers, mechanics — receives a 3% raise based on their pay grade midpoint. Read more
💙 East Texas team helps first responders carry the hard calls The East Texas Critical Incident Stress Management Team is training first responders across the region in peer support and self-care techniques for the aftermath of traumatic calls. The volunteer team has been around since 1993 and draws from local agencies, including the Tyler Police Department. It's the kind of quiet, steady work most of us never see, and it matters for the people who show up on our worst days. Read more
🚗 Expect more patrols through Aug. 2 TxDOT launched Operation Slowdown on July 18, and you'll likely see more patrol cars on East Texas roads through Aug. 2. At least five regional agencies are taking part, including Tyler PD, the Smith County Sheriff's Office, and the Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office. Tyler police spokesman Andy Erbaugh said the department uses crash data to decide where to focus — spots like Troup Highway and the Loop, Broadway and the Loop, and Old Jacksonville and Grande. Statewide, speeding was a factor in more than 150,000 crashes in 2025, with 1,247 people killed. TxDOT's Jeff Williford said the timing is deliberate: it's the stretch between the Fourth of July and Labor Day when more people are out on the road. Read more
